What Will It Take to Qualify for Boston?

Qualifying for Boston isn’t about finding one magical workout—or simply running
more miles.

A Boston qualifying performance is built over time. It takes the right combination of purposeful training, strength, recovery, race-specific preparation and smart execution—all shaped around the

individual runner.

Boston Has Always Been Personal

Growing up in Massachusetts, the Boston Marathon was woven into the fabric of my childhood. Every April, my family would watch runners turn at the Newton Firehouse and make their way toward Heartbreak Hill. My aunt was a three-hour marathoner, my father ran Boston for charity many times, and the race always felt both familiar and welcoming, while its participants seemed larger than life.

When I was in sixth grade, my father was struggling through the Newton Hills and considering dropping out. I asked if I could run with him for a little while. Wearing jean shorts and a pink Esprit T-shirt, I jumped onto the course and ran a few miles beside him. That day, I decided I would come back and run Boston myself someday.

My road to Boston did not follow the tangents.

In 2018, at the Disney Marathon, I ran a Boston qualifying time with less than a minute of cushion. I knew I had little chance of making it into Boston with that time, but it was still one of the proudest moments of my running life.

This was something no one could take away from me. I was a Boston Qualifier. I proudly submitted my time on registration day, crossed my fingers, and hoped. I also knew this wasn’t the end of my story.

It took until my sixth marathon to finally run a large enough buffer to earn my place in Boston. Along the way, I learned to correct many of the same mistakes I now see other runners make. I ran too many miles too fast. I underestimated fueling—if I fueled at all. I didn’t build enough aerobic volume. I didn’t understand pacing well enough. I thought overall speed was always the answer.

Over time, my training changed. I learned to build fitness more patiently, fuel properly, pace with intent, respect recovery, and train for the marathon as a complete system rather than a collection of hard workouts.

Eventually, Boston qualifying stopped feeling like something I might stumble into and became the result of a process I understood. When I finally ran my first Boston in 2021, it was more than another marathon. It was the race I had imagined since I was a child on the Newton Hills.

Now, as I prepare to run my sixth Boston Marathon, I coach runners who are somewhere on their own version of that journey.

I know what it feels like to miss. I know what it feels like to technically qualify and still be left out. I know what it feels like to wonder what needs to change. I also know what it feels like when the pieces finally come together.

My goal is to help runners remove some of the unnecessary twists and turns from that road and smooth the journey where I can. I want to help runners understand the why behind their training, build the fitness they truly need, and create a clearer path toward their own Boston qualifying performance.
